A man’s home-made bomb in southern Italy
By GREGORY BAGLIA/AFP/Getty ImagesThe discovery of a homemade bomb in a villa in a southern Italian city was a huge shock, but not a total surprise, said police in Palermo.
According to police, a resident in the villa, named as Mario, made the bomb on Thursday night with a simple hammer.
It was then detonated by his own hand, killing himself and injuring another person.
The incident is being investigated as an act of terrorism.
Police said the person who made the device is believed to be an Albanian national.
The villa is located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of the capital, Rome, and about 150 kilometers (90 miles) south of Naples.
The bomb was found in the courtyard of the villas owner, police said.
It’s not clear whether Mario was connected to an Albano terrorist group or a small group of young men who used the bomb to cause a minor injury.
